The journey begins!
Exit the city center’s hustle and bustle and head towards the majestic temple of Sounio, a rocky
promontory situated at the southeastern tip of Attica.
The drive along the impressive coastline of Attica is an experience in itself. The winding road follows the contours of the countless successive little coves and bays with crystal waters, offering fantastic views of this dramatic landscape which the ancients associated with Poseidon’s kingdom.
Undoubtedly, this area’s must-see is the spectacular marble Temple of Poseidon, honoring the ancient Greek god of the sea dating back to the fifth
century BCE.
You could either choose to visit Sounio during the day, adding a refreshing dip in one of the many beaches along the way, or you can set your journey in the evening hours to marvel at the astonishing sunset over the blue waters of the Aegean Sea.
Before journeying back to Athens, depending on the time of your departure, you could visit the port town of Lavrion with its numerous fish taverns and its small Archeological and Mineralogical Museums. You could also have a stop at the theater of Thorikos, which is thought to be the earliest surviving ancient theater in Greece.
Approximate driving time:
2.5 hours (150 kilometers)
