Enjoy a Self-Drive excursion to Marathon, a place of rich history and natural beauty
The journey begins!
Exit the city center’s hustle and bustle and head towards the emblematic destination of Marathon, only 50 km away from the city center.
Famous for the ‘Battle of Marathon’ in 490 B.C.E., Marathon is considered one of the most unique places in Attica.
Along the way, you can’t miss stopping at the human-made Lake Marathon with its impressive dam with a marble coating built-in 1929.
The “must-visit” site of this excursion is the Marathon burial mound. Erected in 490 BC, this is a 10-meter high hillock rising from this unassuming plain, a collective tomb of the 192 Athenians who fell in battle and were ceremonially cremated.
You will then visit the Archeological Museum of Marathon, a small but essential stop. In close vicinity to the archeological site are many beautiful beaches where, during the summer season, you can enjoy a swim. The most famous, Schinias, is declared a National Park, which has a pine forest
bordering its sandy shore.
Alternatively, before returning to Athens, you may combine a visit to the not so famous yet interesting archeological area of Ramnous, which is just 12km from Marathon.
