Eleusis Archeological Site
Ancient Eleusis is located about 17 km from Athens and is one of the most important archeological sites in Greece and it was here that the Eleusinian mysteries took place every year around September, lasting 9 days. The initiation ceremonies, dedicated to the cult of the goddess Demeter, revolved around her daughter Persephone’s abduction by Hades, the God of the Underworld and her subsequent return above ground, in effect symbolizing the cycle of life with death and rebirth. The monuments at the site include the Sacred Court where pilgrims gathered and gave offerings to the goddesses, and which marked the end of the Sacred Way which led to Eleusis from Athens, the Great Propylaia, the Lesser Propylaia, the Telesterion or large square hall where pilgrims were initiated, the Triumphal Arches, the Kallichoron well, the Ploutoneion or sacred cave which tradition has it was the entrance to Hades, and the Mycenaean Megaron.
